Most Beekeepers Miss This — By the Time You See Swarm Cells, You’re Already Too Late

Most beekeepers are watching for swarm cells. That’s the mistake.
By the time you see them, there’s already a 70–80% chance the colony will swarm.
The first real sign shows up earlier. When capped brood starts outweighing open brood, the colony is shifting. As larval numbers drop, so does larval pheromone
(β-ocimene), which normally helps suppress queen rearing.
At the same time, rapid population growth creates congestion in the brood nest. As movement becomes restricted, the queen’s mandibular pheromone (QMP) is no longer effectively distributed through worker contact. Once that signal weakens, the colony begins preparing to reproduce.

Spring buildup is exponential population growth. The colony is increasing recruitment faster than attrition, with the queen laying roughly 800–1,100 eggs per day. But there are limits—space for brood, and the colony’s capacity to care for it (typically 5–7 frames).
When those limits are hit, pressure builds.
Swarming is the colony reproducing at the superorganism level.
It’s natural. But it’s also manageable.
Give them space—especially drawn comb in the brood nest. Relieve congestion before pheromone distribution breaks down. Or split the hive and use that population to your advantage.
If you want to stay ahead of swarming, don’t wait for queen cells. By then, the biology is already in motion.
