Beekeeping FAQ #2: How Do I Check If My Bees Are Healthy Going Into Fall?

Knowing colony health before winter is critical.

Answer: Start by testing for Nosema using a bee sample under a microscope. For Varroa mites, you can use alcohol washes or sugar rolls, or use drop boards for a passive, less invasive method. Colonies with low parasite loads are much more likely to overwinter successfully.

Pro Tip: Keep a simple notebook or spreadsheet for your results. We recommend testing monthly as tracking helps you spot trends and act before problems grow.
