Welcome to The Beekeepers Academy

As Professor Scott and I prepare to launch The Beekeepers Academy, I can’t help but reflect on the early days of my own beekeeping journey. I remember taking my first classes and still feeling unsure about what to do or how to do it. Thankfully, I quickly found my mentor, Mark, who practiced treatment-free beekeeping. His guidance was invaluable and showed me just how important mentorship is in this field.

Beekeeping can feel overwhelming, especially with the abundance of opinions and advice floating around on social media. Early on, I realized the importance of basing decisions on evidence—whether it’s research we’ve conducted ourselves through years of observation or peer-reviewed studies we’ve tested in practice. Having a strong foundation rooted in facts made all the difference for me.

Looking back, I recognize how fortunate I was to find both a great mentor and the University of Montana’s beekeeping program. But I also know many others aren’t as lucky. Having faced some learning challenges of my own, I understand how intimidating it can be to ask questions, especially when you’re just starting out. My experience as a flight instructor taught me how vital it is to create a supportive environment where learners feel comfortable and respected. That philosophy has shaped how I approach teaching beekeeping today.

Every year, I learn something new that changes or refines my practices. I’ve come to believe that questioning your methods and staying open to growth are crucial parts of this journey. At the same time, having a solid understanding of bee biology and behavior provides a reliable foundation on which to build.

Professor Scott brings a unique ability to break down complex concepts into simple, actionable steps anyone can follow. His wealth of knowledge and his dedication to helping others are welcomed in the beekeeping world. Together, we hope to create a space where you feel supported and empowered to succeed—without judgment—while contributing to the well-being of our precious bees.
